Repairing Sticking, Loose or Fallen-Off Drawers

How to diagnose and fix drawers that stick, sag, come off their runners or will not close, for both flat-pack and solid wood furniture.

Drawers take more daily use than almost any other part of a household piece, so it is no surprise they are the first to go wrong. A drawer that sticks, drops at the front or jumps off its runners can usually be fixed with simple tools and a little patience.

Identify the type of drawer

Metal runners

Common in flat-pack: a metal rail on the cabinet side and a matching channel on the drawer. They may have plastic rollers or ball bearings.

Plastic or wooden runners

Older or cheaper units use plastic channels or wooden slides that wear and warp.

Traditional wooden drawers

Dovetailed or dowelled boxes that slide on wooden rails or a centre guide. Sticking is often caused by humidity and wear.

Common faults and fixes

The drawer sticks or drags

  1. Remove the drawer and look for debris, swollen edges or paint build-up.
  2. Check the runners for bent metal or broken rollers.
  3. For wooden drawers, rub the sides with candle wax or beeswax. If swollen, sand lightly, avoiding the fit becoming too loose.
  4. Check the carcass is square and level. A slightly twisted unit makes drawers bind.

The drawer sags or tilts

  • Tighten the screws holding the runners to the cabinet and drawer.
  • Check the runners are level with each other, left to right and front to back.
  • Replace damaged or bent runners. They are often inexpensive and available as a matched pair.

The drawer comes off its track

Most runners have a release clip or latch. To refit:

  1. Pull the cabinet runners fully out.
  2. Line up the drawer rails and slide them in at the same angle.
  3. Press release tabs if present, then push the drawer home.
  4. Test for smooth running.

The front will not stay on or has come loose

  • Tighten or replace the fixings that hold the front to the box.
  • If screw holes have stripped, use dowel and glue to rebuild them, as described in our guide to fixing wobbly furniture.
  • Check that cam locks and dowels are present and correctly aligned.

The base has dropped out

Thin hardboard bases slide into grooves and are held with small nails. If one sags, re-nail it and add a thin batten under the middle for support. Do not overload drawers, since the base is not designed for heavy weight.

Preventing future problems

  • Avoid overloading drawers, and put heavy items in the lower ones.
  • Pull and push straight, not at an angle.
  • Keep runners free of dust and grit with a vacuum brush.
  • Re-check fixings every few months.

When replacement is better

If runners are damaged beyond repair or the box has split, replacement runners or a new drawer box may be the better route. Measure the cabinet opening, runner length and load rating before buying.

Getting help

A handyperson can fix runners, re-hang drawer fronts and adjust doors in one visit, often alongside assembling other items. Describe the item and the fault, and add photos in your request. See furniture assembly costs for typical pricing approaches, and browse services.

A step-by-step fix for a sticking drawer

  1. Remove the drawer fully, using any release clips shown in the manual.
  2. Look at the runners and the sides for scuffs, swelling or debris.
  3. Wipe both parts clean and let any dampness dry out.
  4. On wooden runners, rub a little candle wax or dry lubricant along the contact surface.
  5. Check the carcass is square and level, since a twisted frame causes drawers to bind.
  6. Refit the drawer and test it, adjusting runner screws as needed.

Common mistakes

  • Spraying heavy oil that attracts dust and stains clothing.
  • Forcing a drawer shut and bending the runner.
  • Overloading a flat-pack drawer with heavy items.
  • Sanding too much and leaving a gap that never closes.

When a quick repair is not enough

A split drawer side, a bowed base or a crumbled runner mount may mean the unit has reached the end of its life. A handyperson or furniture assembler may be able to reinforce or replace parts, but weigh up the cost against replacing the unit. Quick checks before you start

Check the drawer is not sticking only when full, because overloading is a common cause. Take items out, test the runner, and look for dropped items behind the drawer that block closing. Also check whether a nearby door or handle is catching on the drawer front. It is far easier to solve those causes than to replace runners.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my drawer stick only in damp weather?

Wood absorbs moisture and swells. Waxing the edges helps, and keeping the room ventilated reduces the problem.

Can I replace just one runner?

Runners are usually sold as a pair, and replacing both keeps movement even. Match the length, mounting style and load rating.

Is it worth repairing flat-pack drawers?

Often yes, because runner replacement is inexpensive. If the chipboard box is crumbling or screw holes are repeatedly stripped, a new unit may be more practical.
