Moving Checklist for the Last Two Weeks Before Your Move

A day-by-day UK checklist for the final fortnight before moving house, covering confirmations, packing, cleaning, paperwork and what to keep with you.

The last fortnight is where a well-planned move either holds together or comes apart. The big decisions are made, so this is about execution: confirming, packing, tidying and keeping a few things within reach. If you have followed the eight-week plan you are in good shape, and if not, this list will catch up.

Fourteen to ten days out

  • Reconfirm with your mover. Date, arrival window, crew, vehicle, price and a contact number for the day.
  • Confirm access. Parking suspension, lift booking, key collection times.
  • Check your completion status with solicitor or landlord, and know who to phone if it slips.
  • Start packing in earnest. Spare rooms, books, pictures, ornaments.
  • Order any missing materials. Tape, labels, extra boxes.
  • Use up the freezer. Plan meals around what is in it.

Nine to six days out

  • Pack most rooms, leaving only daily items. Use labels and keep a numbered list.
  • Dismantle furniture that you can safely, see disassembling furniture.
  • Arrange cleaning, if you want a professional clean at handover.
  • Return borrowed items and collect things lent out.
  • Organise pet and child care for moving day.
  • Check broadband and utility transfers are on track.

Five to three days out

  • Pack the kitchen. Leave a minimal set of plates, cups and cutlery. See packing a kitchen.
  • Defrost and empty the fridge-freezer at least 24 hours before, if it is moving.
  • Prepare an essentials bag with documents, chargers, medication, snacks and toiletries.
  • Withdraw cash if needed for incidentals.
  • Photograph meter readings and keep copies of important documents.

Two days out

  • Take down curtains, blinds and shelves if they are going with you.
  • Disconnect and prepare appliances. See moving appliances.
  • Make a plan for the new house. Where do large items go, what rooms need protecting.
  • Charge phones and power banks.

If your date slips

Chains move, and completions slide. Prepare for it:

  1. Know the cancellation or rescheduling terms of your mover.
  2. Keep essentials and a few days of clothes unpacked.
  3. Ask whether short-term storage is possible, see storage cost.
  4. Tell the parking authority and any other bookings promptly.

What to keep with you, not in the van

  • Passports, ID and paperwork
  • Keys and key-collection details
  • Medication
  • Laptops, phones, chargers
  • Valuables and jewellery
  • Cash and cards
  • A kit for the first night, see first night essentials box

Why the last fortnight goes wrong

Most last-minute stress comes from the same few causes: packing is underestimated, admin is left until the final days and nobody has thought about the first evening in the new home. Spotting these early lets you spread the load.

A realistic daily rhythm

Rather than trying to do everything at weekends, aim for one or two clear jobs each day:

  1. Weekday evenings: one room or one category of items, about an hour or two.
  2. Weekends: the bigger jobs, such as the loft, garage, kitchen and furniture.
  3. Final three days: only the things you use daily should remain unpacked.

Pack the rooms you use least first, and leave the bedroom and bathroom until last.

The final-week admin pass

TaskWhy it matters
Take final meter readings, with photosAvoids billing disputes
Confirm utilities and broadband start datesHelps you have services on day one
Check post redirection is in placeMail and bills reach you
Return library books, keys and parking permitsAvoids loose ends
Clear the bins and recyclingCouncils may not collect extra
Cancel or move subscriptions and deliveriesStops parcels going to the wrong address

Cleaning and handover

If you rent, the end-of-tenancy clean is often the difference between a full and partial deposit return, so allow time or book a cleaner. If you own, decide whether you will clean before the move or after the van has left. Either way, keep cloths, a bucket and bin bags aside, and do not pack them.

Common mistakes

  • Packing the kettle, medication or chargers
  • Forgetting to label the boxes that need to be opened first
  • Leaving the loft or shed until the day before
  • Not telling the mover about a last-minute extra such as a garden shed or bikes
  • Skipping a final walk-round of every cupboard and drawer

The night before

Charge devices, set out clothes, check the essentials bag and make sure the route to the front door is clear. Get a decent sleep, since the next day is long.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start packing the kitchen?

About a week before, leaving only items you use every day. Do the bulk of it three to four days out.

Should I confirm with the mover again?

Yes. A quick message ten days before and again the day before keeps everyone aligned.

What should I do with food that is left?

Use perishables first and donate unopened non-perishables. Carry a small cool bag for essentials on the day.

What if I have not packed enough by the day before?

Prioritise. Pack by room, put loose items into bags or crates, and ask your mover whether they can help with some packing on the day. That is usually better than leaving things half done.
