Common questions

  • Is drain unblocking covered by home insurance? It depends on your policy. Some buildings policies include drainage cover, others do not. Check your documents before paying, and ask the insurer before work begins.
  • Does a plumber charge more for a kitchen tap than a bathroom tap? Not by type alone. Kitchen sinks often have more cramped, cluttered cupboards, which adds time, so the labour can come out slightly higher.
  • Is a 24-hour plumber always more expensive? Typically yes, because the work is out of normal hours and the plumber must be on call. Daytime booking is cheaper where the situation allows.
  • Is it cheaper to pay a plumber by the hour or the job? Neither is always cheaper. Hourly suits uncertain jobs where the cause needs finding. A fixed price suits clearly defined work and protects you if it overruns, though a plumber may price in some margin for that risk.
  • Can a plumber charge a call-out fee if they do no work? If the fee was agreed beforehand and they attended and diagnosed the problem, it is normally payable. If it was never mentioned, you can reasonably dispute an unexpected charge.
  • How often should I bleed radiators? Only when needed, such as at the start of the heating season or when cold spots appear. Frequent bleeding suggests a system issue.
